Order of Matins

Teacher, please tell us about Matins.
Matins is a traditional celebratory morning worship service. Many portions of the service are sung. Martin Luther was thorough in his teaching that liturgical music and song is a significant and proper means for worship. Luther summarized his beliefs about music and worship in these words: “Next to the word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our hearts, minds and spirits.” We generally follow the guidance set forth in the traditional Lutheran Book of Worship LBW. At this time, our Matins service will be mostly Acapella.
The scheduled Order of Matins we follow consists of: Invitatory, Venite, Hymn, Psalmody, Lection, Sermon, Te Deum Laudamus, Prayers, Kyrie, Lord’s Prayer, Salutation, Benediction, and Silent Prayer.

Order of Vespers

Teacher, please tell us about Vespers.
Vespers is a traditional celebratory evening worship service. At this time, our Vespers service will be mostly Acapella.
The scheduled Order of Vespers we follow consists of: Hymn of Invocation of the Holy Spirit, Psalmody and Gloria Patri, Lection, Responsory, Homily, Offertory, Hymn of the Day, Versicles, Canticle and Antiphon, Magnificat, General Intercessions, Kyrie, Lord’s Prayer, Collect of the Day, Salutation, Collect for Peace, Benediction and Silent Prayer.

The Protestant Reformation

On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther was an Augustinian monk who was inspired to engage the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church by nailing 95 Theses to the local community All Saints Church door in Wittenberg, Saxony. The official translated title of the document Martin wrote in Latin is the “Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences.” This event, coupled with ensuing debate along with the Roman Catholic and local government reaction to Martin Luther, formally started the Protestant Reformation. The document was disseminated across Europe with the assistance of technology of the day, the printing press. The focus of the 95 Theses was a call to purify the church and a belief that the Biblical Scripture (Sola Scriptura), not tradition, should be the sole source of spiritual authority. Martin Luther is credited not only with leading the Protestant Reformation Movement but also founding the Lutheran Church.
Martin Luther was an inspired spiritual song writer. Martin wrote the hymn, “Ein feste Burg ist unser Got” (“A Mighty Fortress is Our God”) in German. Psalm 46 is the inspiration for this hymn. This hymn was published and distributed across Europe. The hymn became one of the popular Reformation hymns of its time.
Soon after the nailing of the 95 Theses to the All Saints Church door, there were more Lutheran services than Roman Catholic masses celebrated there.

Missional Ministry Workshop

Missional Ministry Workshop
#LCMC14 Gathering. Des Moines

“Planting a new congregation was the most difficult thing I have ever done in my years of ministry. It was also the greatest!” – Rev. Dan Clites, LCMC church planter and coach.

Planting a new congregation is not easy. Then again, picking up the cross and following Jesus is not meant to be easy. It is, however, meant to be great!

The event is hosted by the Rev. Dan Clites, LCMC’s Coordinator for New Ministry Development. Dan planted and led Rejoice! Lutheran Church in Northfield-Dundas, Minnesota for 10-years before taking on his new role as a church planting coach. He is passionate about developing missional communities that can spring from our existing congregations in order to be more effective in reaching the unreachable and discipling them to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ.

Feeding the Hungry

Meals From The Heartland mealsfromtheheartland.org is a non-profit organization delivering meals to starving people around the world.
At the #LCMC14 Gathering Spirit of Peace Church Valley Nebraska peacelcmc.org went the distance skipping dinner and other scheduled evening activities in order to pack meals from start to finish, from newbie assembly line workers to the very last boxed meal.
All said there were over 275,000 boxes of 32 bagged meals packaged in this effort to feed starving people around the globe.
The meals consist of bagged rice, soy, vegetables and vitamins. 300 gram dry weight packages are expected to feed one meal to six people.

10 Feed the hungry and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as day. Isaiah 58:10.
