Prayer Invocation

Loving God, bless all those gathered here today as we come together in friendship and fellowship.

Thank you for the blessings of our individual and collective God-given gifts.

Place in our hearts the desire to make a difference to our families, to our community, to our country, and to the many cultures and peoples worldwide.

Give us balance in times of distraction and uncertainty.

Help us move towards our goals with determination and always with an abundant sense of humor.

Thank you for food in a world where many know only hunger; For our faith in a world where many know fear; For friends in a world where many know only loneliness.

Please bless this food we are about to share, those who prepared it, those who serve it, and those who have worked to make today the special occasion that it is.

For all of this we give you thanks.

Servant Leader characteristics
Servant Leader characteristics

Introduction:
Solomon brings us traditional wisdom in Proverbs, teaching us, “a capable wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.” There is so much greatness we can learn from a servants heart and example. Proverbs 31 is an alphabetical acrostic, a literary work of art. We have an example of an ideal woman for every man should be blessed.
David is speaking admirably to God in Psalm 54, despite the fact that others are speaking vile words.
Today’s teaching and wisdom from James describes how people interact with one another. Wise leadership contrasts behaviors that defeats community strength. Are we equipped to behave as godly leaders?
In the gospel of Mark today, Jesus is back in Galilee with His disciples looking for quality time to teach. True greatness among us comes with being servant of all. Let us revel in the radical Grace of God that many people then and now simply can not understand. Dear God we are grateful your son Jesus shows us the way to navigate life and died for our sins so we may share eternity with you despite our human nature. Amen.

Opening Hymn

Scripture:
Old Testament: Proverbs 31:10-31.
Psalm: Psalm 54.
New Testament: James 3:7-8; James 3:13-4:3.
Gospel: Mark 9:30-37.

Prayer: O God, Wisdom of the universe,
you bear the pain of your people.
Grant us the gift of wisdom,
that we may discern your way
and live justly and graciously
amid the struggles of this world. Amen.

Prayer Intentions:
Friends in Christ,
God invites us to hold the needs of our sisters and brothers
as dear to us as our own needs.
Loving our neighbors as ourselves,
we offer our thanksgivings and our petitions
on behalf of the church and the world.
Prayers of the People;
Hear our prayers, God of power,
and through the ministry of your Son
free us from the grip of the tomb,
that we may desire you as the fullness of life
and proclaim your saving deeds to all the world. Amen.

Apostles Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. (Book of Concord).

Our Father
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. (Book of Concord). (Matthew 6:9-13).

Handshake of Peace

Confession
The Apostle John proclaims, If we confess our sins He who is faithful and just will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Keeping the Gift

Keeping the Gift

Life takes on a new meaning when we open ourselves to this gift. Page 276.

Gift
Gift

Basic Text, p.107. Neglecting our recovery is like neglecting any other gift we are given. Suppose someone gave you a new car. Would you let it sit in the driveway until the tires rotted? Would you just drive it, ignoring routine maintenance, until it expired on the road? Of course not! You would go to great lengths to maintain the condition of such a valuable gift.

Recovery is also a gift, and we have to care for it if we want to keep it. While our recovery doesn’t come with an extended warranty, there is a routine maintenance schedule. This maintenance includes regular meeting attendance and various forms of service. We have to do some daily cleaning-our Tenth Step-and, once in a while, a major Fourth Step overhaul will be required. But if we maintain the gift of recovery, thanking the Giver each day, it will continue.

The gift of recovery is one that grows with the giving. Unless we give it away, we can not keep it. But in sharing our recovery with others, we come to value it all the more.

Just for Today: My recovery is a gift, and I want to keep it. I will do the required maintenance, and I will share my recovery with others. – (c) 2018. NA World Services.

And I could tell she was leaving
And I thought, aw, she’ll be back
Till she turned around and pointed at the wall an said

That picture from our honeymoon
That night in Frisco Bay
Just give it away
She said, give it away
And that big four-poster king-size bed
Where so much love was made
Just give it away
She said, just give it away.

Opening Prayer:
Thankful Hearts

We thank You Lord, for all you give; the food we eat, the lives we live; and to our loved ones far away, please send your blessings, Lord we pray. Help us all to live our days with thankful hearts and loving ways. Amen.

Thankful Hearts
Thankful Hearts

Cultivating a thankful heart is a necessity. Without gratitude we would not be a world that goes round and round. Reciting prayer before meals is a great way we can continue to build our thankful hearts and cultivate authenticity. Remembering the Lord and everything that goes into every meal is extremely important. Whether it is the person preparing the meal, the farmer growing the food or even the dear friend that orchestrated the time to be together having a thankful heart created by prayer. – Beliefnet.

Memorial Prayer

Safely Home
I am home in heaven, dear ones;
oh, so happy and so bright!
There is a perfect joy and
beauty in the everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
safely home in heaven at last.
There is work still waiting for you,
so you must not idly stand,
do it now, while life remains
you shall rest in God’s own land.
When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you home;
oh, the rapture of that meeting
oh, the joy to see you come!

God Needed an Angel in Heaven
God needed an angel in heaven
to stand at the Savior’s feet;
His choice must be the rarest
a lily pure and sweet.
He gazed upon the mighty throng
then stopped and picked the best,
our loved one (child) was His chosen one
with Jesus she [he] is now at rest.

Strength for Your Journey

Strength for Your Journey

The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. Habakkuk 3:19

God Loves You
God Loves You

We can trust the Lord to be our strength in tough times.

Habakkuk 3:16–19. Psalms 137–139. 1 Corinthians 13.

Hinds Feet on High Places, a classic allegory of the Christian life, is based on Habakkuk 3:19. The story follows the character Much-Afraid as she goes on a journey with the Shepherd. But Much-Afraid is scared so she asks the Shepherd to carry her.

The Shepherd kindly replies, “I could carry you all the way up to the High Places myself, instead of leaving you to climb there. But if I did, you would never be able to develop hinds’ feet, and become my companion and go where I go.”

Much-Afraid echoes the questions of the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk; and if I am honest, my questions too: “Why must I experience suffering?” “Why is my journey difficult?”

Habakkuk lived in Judah in the late seventh century BC before the Israelites were taken into exile. The prophet found himself in a society that overlooked social injustice and was immobilized by the fear of imminent invasion by the Babylonians. Habakkuk 1:2–11. Habakkuk asked the Lord to intervene and remove suffering. Habakkuk 1:13. God replied that He would act justly but in His timing. Habakkuk 2:3.

In faith, Habakkuk chose to trust the Lord. Even if the suffering did not end, the prophet believed that God would continue to be his strength.

We too can take comfort that the Lord is our strength to help us endure suffering and will also use the most challenging of life’s journeys to deepen our fellowship with Christ. – Lisa Samra. Daily Bread.

God, sometimes my suffering seems too much to bear. Help me to trust You and continue to walk with You on this journey.

God Will NEVER Abandon You

Valley Days I Am Worship Celebration
Valley Days I Am Worship Celebration

Introduction:

We see and hear the first “I am” statement from Jesus’ teachings in John’s gospel message today. I am the manna. I am the bread of life. God has provided His people manna, bread from heaven, just as Jesus fed 5000 with the loaves of bread. John wants to bring his message to us to trust in Jesus.

In our reading from 1 Kings today, Elijah finds himself in the wilderness, crying out to the Lord to come take his life. Have we felt like this ever in our own lives? Chances are we may have felt so oppressed, in pain, or even consider ourselves so complete, that we cry out to the Lord, come take me. Would not eternal rest best anything we may experience here on God’s planet Earth? Of course our compassionate Lord sends angels to Elijah. May the Lord bless us all!

The reading from the prophet Samuel today takes us into David’s life of violent experiences. David must come to grips with a son, Absolom, who threatens David’s life on the throne. David grieves the death of his son as only a father can. We can liken this to our Father God loving us unconditionally, even though we continue to sin. Although David could not restore Absolom, we trust that our Father God, can and will restore us when we turn back to Him in His forgiveness for our sins.

In Psalm 34 David brings us a testimony, a life story, events in David’s life that formed his character. David needed the Lord to provide him with life or his life as he knew it would be snuffed out. As God delivered David, we must have faith God will deliver us.

As Paul spoke to the Ephesians in today’s reading, he also speaks to us. In speaking to our neighbors, demonstrate love and concern.

So much message!

A long time ago, twelve young men left everything to follow a promise, placing their entire future on a foundation of hope. That foundation was Jesus. Their future was the Church. Never meant to be an institution or political entity, that naive group of young men would later grow into a worldwide expression of God’s commitment to heal, save, and deliver.
