{"id":1568,"date":"2016-06-01T07:00:44","date_gmt":"2016-06-01T13:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.peacelcmc.org\/?p=1568"},"modified":"2016-06-01T21:05:14","modified_gmt":"2016-06-02T03:05:14","slug":"aa-in-our-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.peacelcmc.org\/?p=1568","title":{"rendered":"AA in Our World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) in Our World<\/p>\n<p>AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) is an organization well known for its &#8220;Twelve Steps&#8221; and &#8220;Twelve Traditions.&#8221; Those who attend AA meetings learn the &#8220;Steps&#8221; through rote memorization as it is customary for someone in the group meeting to read the Steps aloud every meeting. Ideally these steps will be taught, supervised and practiced through the member&#8217;s relationship with a sponsor. Peer support is generally offered and available in the thematic group discussion that follows the presentation of a Step, reading from the &#8220;Big Book,&#8221; or a Daily Reflection. Seven of the twelve &#8220;Steps&#8221; (presented later in this document) make reference to &#8220;God&#8221; or a &#8220;Higher Power.&#8221; There are meetings that may be centered on Christian worship, Scripture, Spirituality, or other religious practices.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1570\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1570\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.peacelcmc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/image-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1570\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.peacelcmc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/image-1-199x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Alcoholics Anonymous 4th Ed. 2001\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.peacelcmc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/image-1-199x300.jpeg 199w, https:\/\/blog.peacelcmc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/image-1.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1570\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alcoholics Anonymous 4th Ed. 2001<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Twelve Step Programs<br \/>\nOriginally proposed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as a method of recovery from alcoholism, the &#8220;Twelve Steps&#8221; were first published in the 1939 book written by Bill Wilson and Dr Bob Smith, titled &#8220;Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism.&#8221; Other &#8220;Twelve-Step to Recovery&#8221; groups adopt and adapt the AA &#8220;Twelve Steps&#8221; as guiding principles. The Twelve Step Program contains a set of guiding principles outlining a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion or other behavioral problems.<\/p>\n<p>As summarized by the American Psychological Association, the process involves the following:<\/p>\n<p>admitting that one cannot control one&#8217;s alcoholism, addiction or compulsion;<\/p>\n<p>recognizing a higher power that can give strength;<\/p>\n<p>examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member);<\/p>\n<p>making amends for these errors;<\/p>\n<p>learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior; and<\/p>\n<p>helping others who suffer from the same alcoholism, addictions or compulsions.<\/p>\n<p>VandenBos, Gary R.
