The Summons Song – John Bell
Lord, your summons echoes true
When you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you
And never be the same.
In your company I’ll go
Where your love and footsteps show.

The Lord Chose You Devotion

When our children were small, I often prayed with them after tucking them into bed. Before prayers, I would sit on the edge of the bed and talk with them. I remember telling our daughter, “If I could line up all the girls in the world, I would walk down the line looking for you. After going through the entire line, I would choose you to be my daughter.” That always put a big smile on her face because she knew she was special.

If that was a smile-worthy moment for her, think of the grace-filled fact that the Creator-God of the universe “from the beginning chose you for salvation” (2 Thess. 2:13). Before time began, He desired to make you His own. This is why Scripture often uses the picture of adoption to communicate the amazing reality that, through no merit or worthiness of our own, we have been chosen by Him.

This is stunning news! We are “beloved by the Lord” (2 Thess. 2:13) and enjoy the benefits of being part of His family. This glorious truth should fill our lives with humility and gratitude. “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us … establish you in every good word and work” (2 Thess. 2:16-17).  – Daily Bread. Joe Stowell.

My Lord I Did Not Choose You. Matthew Smith (2009). (“Tis Not that I Did Choose Thee.” Josiah Conder 1789).

My heart knows none above you;
for you I long, I thirst,
and know that, if I love you,
Lord, you have loved me first.

It’s God’s choice to love you and to make you part of His family.

I will be forever grateful that I am Your child,
Father, and that You love me! Teach me to remember
all the benefits of belonging to You, and may I
serve You faithfully as part of Your family.

AMEN!

INSIGHT: In Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, he assured the believers that they were loved by God and chosen (1 Thess. 1:4). In today’s reading, Paul reiterates this by saying, “God from the beginning chose you for salvation” (2 Thess. 2:13). That God “chooses” people is taught in Scripture (Deut. 7:6-8; Isa. 44:1-2; Rom. 8:28-33; 9:11; Eph. 1:4-6,11; Titus 1:1; 1 Peter 1:1-2). Although a person is “chosen” before the creation of the world (Eph. 1:4-5; 2 Tim. 1:9), this becomes evident in life when one believes in the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Thess. 2:13-14).

Love Finds a Way Reflection Devotion

Years ago I saw a cartoon that depicted a disgruntled, elderly gentleman standing in rumpled pajamas and robe at his apartment door. He just finished securing the door for the night with four locks, two deadbolts, and a chain latch. Later he noticed a small white envelope stuck beneath the door. On the envelope was a large sticker in the shape of a heart. It was a Valentine. Love finds a way.

Only love can change a person’s heart. The Russian author Dostoevsky, in his book The Brothers Karamazov, tells the story of a hardened cynic, Ivan, and his resistance to the love of the Lord. On one occasion his brother Alyosha, a man of deep faith who was confounded by his brother’s resistance, leans over and kisses Ivan. This simple act of love burned into Ivan’s heart.

Perhaps you have a friend who is resisting the Lord’s love. Show His love to him or her, just as the Lord showed love to us when He brought salvation into the world through Jesus. Shower upon others the kind of love described in 1 Corinthians 13 – a love that is patient, kind, humble, and unselfish. – Daily Bread.

Real love is a gift from the Lord that we can keep on giving.

Dear Lord, Teach me to love as You love, and let the whole world know that Jesus Christ lives in my heart, His glorious light to shine. – Brandt.

The Lord pours His love into our hearts to flow out to others.

AMEN.

Who’s the Boss? Reflection Devotion

Well, Who is the Boss?

As my wife was babysitting our two young grandsons, they began to argue over a toy. Suddenly, the younger (by 3 years) forcefully ordered his older brother, “Cameron, go to your room!” Shoulders slumped under the weight of the reprimand, the dejected older brother began to slink off to his room when my wife said, “Cameron, you don’t have to go to your room. Nathan’s not the boss of you!” That realization changed everything, and Cameron, smiling, sat back down to play.

Who’s the Boss? Theme Song – Sanfranchino –

As followers of Christ, the reality of our brokenness and our inclination to sin can assume a false authority much like that younger brother. Sin noisily threatens to dominate our hearts and minds, and the joy drains from our relationship with the Savior.

But through the death and resurrection of Christ, that threat is an empty one. Sin has no authority over us. That is why Paul wrote, “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” Rom. 6:14.

While our brokenness is very real, Christ’s grace enables us to live in a way that pleases God and expresses His transforming power to the world. Sin is no longer our boss. We now live in the grace and presence of Jesus. His dominion in our lives releases us from the bondage of sin. – Daily Bread

God pursues us in our restlessness, receives us in our sinfulness, holds us in our brokenness. – Scotty Smith

All I have is Christ – Sovereign Grace –

I once was lost in darkest night
Yet thought I knew the way
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave
I had no hope that You would own
A rebel to Your will
And if You had not loved me first
I would refuse You still.

INSIGHT: In Romans, Paul teaches about our redemption and justification – how through faith in Jesus Christ, God made us right with Him (Rom. 3:21–4:25). Paul now presents another aspect of our salvation – sanctification (Rom. 6:1–8:39). Because we have been given a new life and a new relationship with God (Rom. 6:4-14), He expects us to live differently and to mature in holiness.

Thank You for Your grace, Jesus, that cleanses us inside.
Your grace is greater than all our sin.
We know we can’t live without it.
And we’re grateful that we don’t have to.

AMEN.
