Celebrate Spring Community Events

Spirit of Peace is a missional community of believers based in the Valley, Nebraska community.

We are currently planning two community events for Valley and (seven mile radius) surrounding communities including, but not limited to: Elk City, Elkhorn, Fremont, LeShara, Mead, Waterloo and Yutan.
We are seeking (everyone) people of all ages and walks of life that wish to participate in these community events.
Of course some people have natural organizer spirit and ability. We welcome these people and would like to provide recognition to all organizers, supporters and participants.

The events include:
– Potluck Picnic Lunch Easter Egg Hunt – Lunch item suggested not required.
 Saturday March 28, 2015 – 12:00 pm. Picnic Lunch 1:00 pm. Easter Egg Hunt
 Valley City Park Large Pavilion 400 W. Vass St, Valley Nebraska

– Nebraska Science Festival Science Demonstrations -

At Risk Adolescent Safety Concerns

Inroads to Recovery InRoadsToRecovery.com presents an educational program on how care givers should best interact with at risk youth in our society. Everyone agrees that adolescents require a safe environment in which to experience life and its challenges as they pass through developmental stages on their way to adult maturity. The related adolescent studies present two observed age groups: 12-17 and 18-25 years old. It appears the problem is that there are too many opportunities available for exposure to the unsafe high risk challenges. Youth may find it even more difficult to maintain appropriate self control after engaging the “slippery slope” of high risk lifestyle. Our society today lends itself to putting too much risk in independence in the minds and hands of adolescents. Unfortunately peers and one’s own ignorance and curiosity may contribute to engaging a high risk lifestyle. This starts as a “slippery slope” that may be coupled with the naive ignorance (arrogance) of, “I am too smart for that bad result,” or “That won’t happen to me!” Sound familiar to any of us? Unfortunately, it is hard to garner all the support needed to correct “closing the barn door after the horse gets loose.” 
So let’s observe these notable behaviors that we may observe and engage before they escalate into more serious risk. Among these behaviors … 
Apparent dizziness or having trouble walking; Red, bloodshot eyes; Difficulty remembering things that just happened; Acting disinterested in school, family or activities he (she) used to enjoy; Acting silly for no apparent reason. 
What regular activities might we engage to be helpful? 
Eat at least one meal with your child; Know who his (her) friends are; Talk to his (her) friends (Know the kind of adolescents he (she) is friends with); Set limits; Ask him (her) daily what he (she) is doing (how the day went); Listen to him (her); There is no privacy (Rule); Keep up on his (her) school and social life; Set time each and every day to talk to him (her); Be a hypocrite; Start now not later.

Although this role appears to require significant dedication and be a “tall order” to fill, we may agree that it is much better and safer to have adolescents in a “safe place” rather than in an “high risk” environment.

Deadly Weapon Reflection

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali used several ring tactics to defeat his opponents; one tactic was taunting. In his fight with George Foreman in 1974, Ali taunted Foreman, “Hit harder! Show me something, George. That don’t hurt. I thought you were supposed to be bad.” Fuming, Foreman punched away furiously, wasting his energy and weakening his confidence.

It’s an old tactic. By referring to Nehemiah’s efforts at rebuilding the broken wall of Jerusalem as nothing more than a fox’s playground (Neh. 4:3), Tobiah intended to weaken the workers with poisonous words of discouragement. Goliath tried it on David by despising the boy’s simple weapons of a sling and stones (1 Sam. 17:41-44).

A discouraging remark can be a deadly weapon. Nehemiah refused to surrender to Tobiah’s discouragements, just as David rejected Goliath’s diabolical teasing. Focusing on The Lord and His help rather than on their discouraging situations, David and Nehemiah both achieved victory.

Taunting can come from anybody, including those who are close to us. Responding to them negatively only saps our energy. But the Lord encourages us through His promises: He will never forsake us (Ps. 9:10; Heb. 13:5), and He invites us to rely on His help (Heb. 4:16). – Daily Bread – Lawrence Darmani.

Do You Encounter a Deadly Weapon? Trust in the Lord!  If You are in a Tunnel of Discouragement, Keep Walking toward the Light. 

INSIGHT: Despite the taunting that the Israelites faced from all sides when rebuilding the walls and city of Jerusalem, they had courage and confidence in the Lord. They had returned to Jerusalem just as the Lord had promised through the prophet Jeremiah (Jer. 29:10). 
Prayer: 
Lord, it’s easy to let discouragement sap my energy and joy.  Please help me to reject all kinds of discouragement in my life and to trust in You for comfort and strength.

The Lord Chose You Devotion

When our children were small, I often prayed with them after tucking them into bed. Before prayers, I would sit on the edge of the bed and talk with them. I remember telling our daughter, “If I could line up all the girls in the world, I would walk down the line looking for you. After going through the entire line, I would choose you to be my daughter.” That always put a big smile on her face because she knew she was special.

If that was a smile-worthy moment for her, think of the grace-filled fact that the Creator-God of the universe “from the beginning chose you for salvation” (2 Thess. 2:13). Before time began, He desired to make you His own. This is why Scripture often uses the picture of adoption to communicate the amazing reality that, through no merit or worthiness of our own, we have been chosen by Him.

This is stunning news! We are “beloved by the Lord” (2 Thess. 2:13) and enjoy the benefits of being part of His family. This glorious truth should fill our lives with humility and gratitude. “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us … establish you in every good word and work” (2 Thess. 2:16-17).  – Daily Bread. INSIGHT: In Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, he assured the believers that they were loved by God and chosen (1 Thess. 1:4). In today’s reading, Paul reiterates this by saying, “God from the beginning chose you for salvation” (2 Thess. 2:13). That God “chooses” people is taught in Scripture (Deut. 7:6-8; Isa. 44:1-2; Rom. 8:28-33; 9:11; Eph. 1:4-6,11; Titus 1:1; 1 Peter 1:1-2). Although a person is “chosen” before the creation of the world (Eph. 1:4-5; 2 Tim. 1:9), this becomes evident in life when one believes in the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Thess. 2:13-14).
